~~~ History ~~~
Dorothy Ann Chapman purchased 160 acres in the northwest quarter of Section ten, in township twenty-seven North of Range one East, in the District of Lands subject to sale at Eau Claire, Wisconsin dated 30 December 1876. On 18 Nov 1907 Dorothy sold her land (Section 10, 27 North, Range 1 East) for $1.00 under the following stipulation " that the said second party (son James Chapman) was to care for and support the first party (Dorothy Chapman) for the rest of her natural life and give her a Christian burial at death". Excluded from this sale was one half acre used as a burial ground.
On March 20,1941 James Chapman sold the land to Mr. & Mrs. George Miller for the sum of $2000. with the stipulation that the one-half acre used for a family burial plot not be farmed over. Miller left the wild roses to grow around the edge to mark it off from the rest of the field, but now it is plowed right up to the plot marker.
On 5 April 1961 the Millers sold the land to Donald L. & Sandra Hansen for the sum of $1.00 with the stipulation "that the Northwest Quarter of the Northwest Quarter of Section Ten , Township Twenty-seven North, Range One East, except one-half acre thereof, so long as the said one-half acre shall be used as a burial ground."
In the early 1960s, the Chapman Family Cemetery was desecrated by the removal of the original markers and the one-half acre of land was plowed-over. Around 1980, grandson George Chapman had a bronze plaque put on the farm showing the burial place of Joseph, Dorothy, and their son, William Chapman, as well as several unnamed grandchildren, and the dimensions of the original cemetery plot.
