Add Photos"The Stedman Family Cemetery is now defunct since it rests under an asphalt parking lot near downtown Pittsboro NC.
No additional Memorials should be created showing this cemetery since the last burial there was in about 1847.
The cemetery was located on land donated by Nathan Alexander Stedman III in a corner of his farm.
The first person buried that was his mother, Prudence Hurlbut Stedman, in 1805.
Over the years since Nathan's own death in 1847, the property containing the cemetery was sold to various
owners including Winship Stedman (Nathan's brother), H H Burk, William Foushee, Annie Chapin, Stephen Cotton, Thomas Womble,
Daniel McLeod, Nathan A Stedman (a nephew), and Alexander Kinchen.
When the town of Pittsboro was laid out, the cemetery was on lots 73 and 88 from the original Pittsboro town plat.
Cemetery Census research by Jim and Bev Wiggins also determined that the cemetery was located under a
parking lot in Pittsboro, Chatham County, North Carolina and not recognizable as a cemetery.
There were fewer than 20 graves in the cemetery and the headstones were probably lost to time between 1847 and 1958.
The cemetery and property had not been maintained for at least 50 years prior to its sell as a future parking lot.
Since the cemetery is under an asphalt parking lot, no headstones were visible when it was paved and no headstones are
visible now.
The Stedman family is now trying to have a historical marker placed at the location to advise of the cemetery's existence.
Has been archeologically excavated and the remains and artifacts recovered have been reinterred in the Pittsboro United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The remains were reinterred on 3 May 2022. A memorial stone will be placed at the gravesite in the fall.
