Please DO NOT ADD memorials intended for Mother of God CEMETERY to this list. There are only three burials at the church itself. Also be aware that there is an early Catholic cemetery in Covington known in the late 1800s and early 1900s as the Old Mother of God Cemetery, that was originally called St Joseph Catholic Cemetery and now is referred to as Buena Vista Cemetery. Many of the burials there were relocated to the newer Mother of God Cemetery. Please check with the cemetery office to be sure your memorial is placed in the correct cemetery listing. Rev. Dr. Ferdinand Kühr, the first pastor of the Germans in Covington, organized the Mutter Gottes Gemeinde in 1841. By the late 1860s overcrowding became an issue, so the first church was demolished and ground was immediately broken for the newly planned Italian Renaissance Revival structure. The cornerstone was set on July 3, 1870 and the building dedicated on Sept. 10, 1871. Unfortunately Father Kühr died during the construction of the new edifice. This historic church features murals by the Vatican artist Johann Schmitt, an early teacher of artist Frank Duveneck, who was baptized in this parish in 1848.
