The Logan Cemetery is located near the site where St. James the Apostle Anglican Church, a log structure, was built in 1893 on land donated by Robert Logan. Logan was one of the early settlers in the area immediately west of Beaverhill Lake, having arrived there in 1886. The Parish of St. James the Apostle, Newton-Logan was dedicated in January of 1896 to serve the area north of the present day town of Tofield. There is evidence that the cemetery site had been used before the church was built as some surviving memorials show dates of death preceding 1893. In 1930, a prairie fire destroyed the church, its records and all wooden markers in the cemetery. Burials there basically ceased, as by then (in 1912), another Anglican parish, Holy Trinity, and the Tofield Cemetery had been established in Tofield.
The Logan Cemetery was eventually forgotten and became overgrown with prairie vegetation. Unfortunately, many of the surviving memorials were damaged and scattered by vandals during this period of neglect. In 1963, construction workers inadvertently "discovered" the cemetery and contacted local authorities who in turn took steps to protect what remained of it. Surviving records of many of the burials in the Logan Cemetery were found in the Burial Register of Holy Trinity Church and in 1992, members of that parish began a project to restore, as much as possible, the long-forsaken plot.
The site was surveyed to determine the extent of the burial area but since once-scattered headstones could not be matched definitively with graves, they were instead assembled in neat rows on a concrete slab "for ease of maintenance and security". A plaque was erected nearby listing all the names on the recovered burial register. However, this list is not complete and "some burials are known only to God".
The Logan Cemetery is located approximately 4 miles (6.5 kilometers) north and 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) east of Tofield on a parcel of land with legal description SE 31-51-18-W4 (Lat 53° 26' 48.32" N, Long 112° 38' 38.33" W).
This location is surrounded by private property and is NOT accessible by road. Permission of the landowner is required for any visit to the site.
The original burial register is stored in the Provincial Archives of Alberta. Researchers can consult the original record although a photocopy is available at both the Tofield Museum and the Tofield Municipal Library. An online transcription is also available on the Town of Tofield website.
