Tommy Waites was born in this area but later his work called him away. During his visits home, he told me he always visited this cemetery. During the 1980s, his visit was met by the devastation logging trucks and road construction had left behind. Out of over 50 graves, Less than 5 headstones were found.
2013 marks a 30 year lapse in time. The majority of people having knowledge of the cemetery have passed. To my knowledge, there are no records of the cemetery. There are a few clues as to who might be buried there. STILL RESEARCHING!!
September 2, 2015 I was informed there were possibly 150 graves at this site. We know for a fact the cemetery was being used as late as 1900, even when the newer cemetery was formed.
It is my understanding the original cemetery was on the Vicker family property but eventually, the land was sold. For reasons unknown to me, another cemetery was formed when Twigg Franklin donated acreage for the Methodist church and cemetery. He is buried at the Newer Rocky Mount Cemetery. These two cemeteries are divided by a highway. The newer is well maintained. The other, no one seems to know was ever there.
Any information regarding this cemetery will be welcomed.
