The cemetery was established June 14, 1892. The deed was between Arabella C Parker and William Whitehead, P. L. Barkerville, George Beale, George Matthewson, George Lloyd, James White and Jerry Rutledge, who were the Trustees of AME Zion Church in Tarboro.
The church was organized in 1866 by the Reverend William H. Pitt of Brooklyn, NY, along with William Clark, Moriah Clark, Zilhia Wilkins, Green Carthey, Lucinda Bryant, Samson Cook, Walker Banks, Hannah Telfair, Esther Moore and Roden Lloyd.
St. Paul held the distinction of being the oldest black church in Tarboro until 2002 when the structure was demolished due to the flood-water damage from the 1999 flood.
On the site presently are several monuments erected to commemorate the church's existence and contributions to the Tarboro community.
