Originally the state took this land in the early 1930s as part of the watershed for a dam project. The Cole family moved their remaining markers to Ringville Cemetery in Worthington. It is unknown if remains were moved or just the markers.
Laura Ellis is the only remaining marker in this cemetery. The folklore is that the workers refused to disturb the grave because she had died of a contagious disease - consumption & small pox most often mentioned - and they were afraid of catching it. More probably, no direct living relatives could be found to authorize moving the marker.
The cemetery isn't located on a road. MACRIS, CSF.805, shows it off the South Street Extension. Without a means to cross the Westfield River, there is no way to reach it from the South Street end. Both Walter Corbin in 1934 and David Torrey in 2007 refer to it as off the Ireland Street Extension.
Directions are from David Torrey's excellent Cemeteries of Chesterfield (on-line at ancestry.rootsweb.com/~torrey/cemeteries):
Take Ireland Street to the Ireland Street Extension
The Ireland Street Extension continues as a dirt road around a farmhouse.
Continue to the cable across the road with a Wildlife Management Area Sign. Please do not block the road as it continues to be used by farm equipment.
Walk south until the road makes a 90 degree left turn
Continue east past an old road junction until you reach an iron fence on the left.
MACRIS uses Laura Ellis Cemetery
Walter Corbin mentions it without a name as having been moved to South Worthington
David Torrey calls it Cole Cemetery as it was located on the land of Consider Cole
