Facing South. If you look closely, you may see that the quarter of the White Ensign which includes the Union Flag does not include St. Patrick's Cross. This is because it represents the flag of the Royal Navy as it would have been flown at the Battle of the Nile, in 1798, three years prior to the Act of Union between Great Britain and Ireland.
