Add PhotosThe Holt Cemetery is located in the NE4,SW4,NE4 of Section 32, Township 18 North, Range 26 East of Adair County, Oklahoma. It is approximately two miles northeast of the town of Westville. In 1937, Gus Hummingbird surveyed the cemetery as part of his efforts with the Works Progress Administration. He recorded the existence of three graves in the cemetery. He stated, "The information concerning this cemetery was furnished by Bill Williams, a resident in the community for fifty years. This cemetery was started the date found on the tombstone of Samuel Holt, for he was the first person buried at this cemetery. There were no graves before this time. The Holt family were part Cherokee and they started this cemetery as a family cemetery. After the coming of the Kansas City Southern Railroad, the town of Westville buried its dead at what was known then and yet as Foreman Cemetery which is located about a mile west of the town. This family decided to bury its dead at this place [Holt Cemetery]. The cemetery was abolished in 1897. Thomas J. Baggett was the last person buried at this place. Baggett was a permitted white man to teach school in the Cherokee Nation. While teaching school he married the daughter of Leonidas Holt. Therefore, he remained in the Cherokee Nation with his wife's people."
Today there is no evidence of the Holt Cemetery. Sometime during the late twentieth century, descendants of Leonidas Holt reinterred the bodies in Holt Cemetery in the Westville Cemetery north of Westville, Oklahoma. The headstones from Holt Cemetery are now in the Westville Cemetery.
