The City of Warren inherited the previously private Oaklawn mausoleum in 1973 when its original caretakers abandoned it in the 1930s or 40s. In 1998, Warren City Council closed and condemned the Oaklawn mausoleum because of its poor condition and the expense to repair and maintain it; at the time the Oaklawn Mausoleum had about 370 known to be interred within it.
In the 1970s, 1996, and 2007; it was discovered that vandals broke into the Oaklawn Mausoleum causing damage and desecrating some occupants.
