The Southfield Reformed Cemetery is located at 26580 Evergreen (1 1/2 Blocks South of Interstate 696 on the East side of Evergreen),Southfield, Oakland County, Michigan. It was formerly known as the "Covenanters Church and Cemetery." The Southfield Reformed Presbyterian Church was organized in 1834 by David Stewart, one of the first covenanters in the township. His son-in-law, John Parks, donated the land for the church and burial ground. In 1838 the Reformed Presbyterians built a church on this lot. The current church building was built during the Civil War, and in 1855, was moved back from Evergreen Road, raised up, and the basement was put under it. The burying ground is on the church land and many early settlers are buried here. The families include the McLaughlins, Stewarts, and Thompsons. The Reformed Presbyterian church of Southfield Township is one of two original churches in America, and the first of its kind in the state. The Covenanters Church has been called the strictest and one of the most historic in America. The Covenanter's Church embraced, in its teachings, the principles of the Second Reformation, or Covenant, of Scotland.(text by Barbara McClelland Lewis)
