Early Marshall County history reveals that for a number of years, the early German settlers held worship services in the Crankelton school house north of Haverhill. In 1872, a new school was built southwest of Haverhill and provided a more central location to hold service.

The Lutheran and Evangelical denominations comprised this rural congregation. On May 15, 1878, this diverse group formed a tentative organization. They acquired five acres on which to build a church and parsonage. In September 1881, they dedicated their wooden frame church, and it served this congregation for 43 years. A new Gothic style brick church, complete with bell tower and stained glass windows, was finished in May, 1924.

The first burial was William Stier, who died August 3, 1880. The cemetery, west of the church, was dedicated on the day of Mr. Stier's funeral.

As the congregation dwindled, it became financially impossible to keep the buildings in repair. The last service held was on September 18, 1988. The church was razed and plans made for the perpetuation of the cemetery. It lies peacefully along a country gravel road, surrounded by farm fields, an ever present reminder of the courage, faith and perseverance of the German American spirit.
