Fairfield Methodist Cemetery
Fairfield, Freestone County, Texas, USA
According to the book "Black Churches in Texas: A Guide to Historic Congregations," the cemetery served as the site for meetings of the Fairfield Colored Methodist Episcopal Church, which met in a grove of trees on the east side of the cemetery until 1897, when a structure was built to house the church on another site. The congregation would grow, move, and eventually become the Jones Chapel United Methodist Church. The book states that the congregation was organized by former slaves in the late 1860s and met on the cemetery site, which was shared by both black and white citizens. It is not clear, however, if the cemetery was already in use in the late 1860s or if the congregation started meeting there at a later date. The earliest known interments are from 1882; but the town of Fairfield dates back to the early 1850s and there are known interments dating back to the 1860s in the adjacent Fairfield Cemetery.
