In 1859, Wheatfield township was divided in two, creating East and West Weatfield Twps.
According to legend, some of the first white settlers in this vicinity were massacred by the Indians before the Revolutionary War days. Caldwell's History of Indiana Countystrengthens this theory by mentiong "Well Filled graveyards on the Indiana County side of the Conemaugh River at least 80 years before the 1859 establishment of the townships.
Two early graveyards were the Hice graveyard (also refered to as the Hice & Pershing graveyard) and the Ninvah Cemetery or Rodger's graveyard. These evidently were the graves of white persons, but who they were or by whom they had been buried it is not known. Both of these cemeteries were badly destroyed in the 1977 flood.
The Hice grave yard was recorded in 1939 by the late Blaine Helman.
This graveyard is located inside the power plant walls and is still visited by families and decorated on Memorial Day and the 4th of July. The upkeep is maintained by the power company.
