My maiden name is Hodge and family lore has always rumored that there was a "lost Hodge cemetery at Altoona" in Pulaski. I wanted to prove or disclaim the story and set out on several trips in search of this cemetery. I used topo maps, and the remembrance of a man in his 90's who knew my grandfathers cousin that was rumored to be buried at this location.
At one time, this cemetery, located on Little Walker Mountain, was where a thriving coal and iron ore mining town. There is some difficulty in reaching this cemetery. It is at least a one mile hike up Little Mountain, having to cross 2 small streams, and follow old logging trails on the mountain.
The cemetery is non-maintained, and few people in the town of Pulaski are familiar with its location. This area, known as Altoona in the late 1800s to mid 1900s, has been renamed by the town to Brookmont.
The easiest route to this cemetery is to follow Cox Hollow Road until it ends state maintenance, and then take a right onto Little Walker Mtn via the Jefferson National Forest. It is best to take the old logging road to the right upon entrance. It is not accessible by vehicle. Follow the trails up the mountain, approximately one mile, to a small clearing. At this clearing, veer to your right approximately 30-40 yards and look very closely in that area. If you were not "looking" for a cemetery, you would walk past the area and never know.
At one time, there was a short fence around the cemetery that has been trampled down. There are only 4 legible headstones in this cemetery, but there are many unmarked graves noted by the additional head and footstones.
