To see the virtual cemetery - including many of the names of those who have cemetery plots elsewhere go to http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=vcsr&GSvcid=88868 - or if this link doesn't work click on Photo Submitter's Name under the memorial photo, and under "Contributions to Find A Grave" click on Virtual Cemetery. The nineteen men who are entombed beneath the memorial in the mine as a result of the 1968 disaster are listed under the Farmington Number 9 Consolidated Coal Memorial, and not elsewhere, with the exception of a couple whom I know have markers in other cemeteries. The other fifty-nine 1968 victims are listed in their respective cemeteries, and not at this Farmington Number 9 Consolidated Coal Memorial, even though their names are rightfully included on the monument to those who lost their lives in the mine disaster.
A survivor of the 1968 disaster was quoted in the local paper as stating he would not go to the annual memorial service held on the Sunday closest to the anniversary of November 20 until the names of the sixteen victims of the 1954 disaster were inscribed on the monument. I will add the victims of the 1954 accident to Find A Grave as I learn of them. A memorial to the 1954 victims sits next to the Catholic Church in Farmington. A picture of it is forthcoming.
In the fall of 2011, West Virginia University Press released a book entitled "No. 9" by Bonnie E Stewart. In the fall of 2009, a play entitled Remembering Number 9 Fairmont State University was performed, based on oral histories obtained by university students.
