According to Reverend Adam B. Condo's book, History of the Indiana Conference of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ published in 1926, "… a log church of worship for that denomination stood here as early as 1866. That accounts for this large cemetery located here. In 1891 a frame church was built under the hill and this same congregation moved to the new building and called their church New Bethel or commonly called Cold Friday, which name was also given to School No. 4 which stood in or near this church." [Note: The school is across the road from where the church once stood and adjoins Cold Friday-New Bethel Cemetery.]
Please note, that Greenbrier Cemetery was commonly called Cold Friday burying ground or cemetery and that what is now called Cold Friday Cemetery, which is located down the hill from Greenbrier was actually called New Bethel Cemetery. Since both cemeteries are located in Cold Friday, each has been called Cold Friday.
There are some burials without the typical gravestones. Those markers are sandstone and other types of rocks.
Indiana Cemetery Locations, Volume 4, published by the Indiana Genealogical Society (April 2009), gives the primary cemetery name as Greenbrier Cemetery with an alternate name of Old Cold Friday Cemetery.
The cemetery is listed in the Cemetery and Burial Grounds Registry of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and in the State Historical Architectural and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD) with Cemetery Record Number CR-31-120 (Greenbrier).
