This small park at the intersection of Great Mills Road and Maryland Route 5 (Point Lookout Road) is dedicated to "Our Deceased Youth". According to a plaque in the park, Sister M. Catherine Malone SCN had a Grotto to Mary erected on the grounds of St. Mary's Academy (in Leonardtown) in 1902. It served there as a shrine until 1984. When St. Mary's Academy merged with Ryken High School, and the buildings at the former academy became part of the community college system, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth donated the grotto to the Memorial Park Prayer Area. The Grotto was moved by Edward and Agnes Langley Tippett. In 1985, the names of deceased youth began to be inscribed on granite monuments. Some of those memorialized may have cremains in burial niches
