Smetanastraße 36-54
13088 Berlin
GERMANY
This cemetery was created in 1876. It's only about 2.5 acres large. To the South it borders the huge Jewish Cemetery Berlin-Weissensee.
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (20-30 years) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse have decomposed naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period the duration can be extended by another 30 years. War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever.
This is one of the four cemeteries, which are owned and run by the Roman-Catholic congregation of St. Hedwig:
Alter Domfriedhof (Berlin-Mitte)
St. Hedwig II (Berlin-Weissensee)
St. Hedwig III (Berlin-Reinickendorf)
St.-Hedwig IV (Berlin-Hohenschönhausen)
The congregation's main house of worship is the
St.-Hedwig-Cathedral in Berlin-Mitte.
