Palmyra was the name given to what is now Davis Island by Immigrants from New England who settled the land in the early 1800's, shortly after the Spanish left the area. Even Earlier, before the American Revolution, the British called the area Three Islands, The Following tombstone was unearthed in the late 1970's by W.F. Cotton of Monroe, La. It was under several feet of dirt with only a corner protruding, There are probably other stones there in the silt, left by decades of flooding.
