Abee Cemetery
Abee, Whitecourt Census Division, Alberta, Canada
Abee Cemetery, by Agnes M. Avery:
Abee Cemetery was started in 1920, when August Haig died at the age of sixty-five. He was buried in the northeast corner of son John's homestead, SE 33-60-21-W4. This area was registered as a cemetery in 1922 and a box social was held in the summer to raise funds to build a wire fence.
Many old-timers are laid to rest here. There are over 150 graves. Some former residents who had moved away from the district had requested that their ashes be brought home to be interred in a family grave.
Every summer, clean-up days or evenings are organized when a good crowd with mowers, rakes, hoes, and many hand tools gather on "John Haig's Hill" to make it look as one undertaker said, "The nicest cemetery he had been in". After the clean-up everyone enjoys a lunch and a visit, looking at the pleasant surroundings.
The cemetery is looked after by a Board of Directors. A secretary-treasurer looks after the books and the chairman keeps a map to record the location of the plots and graves.
Excerpts from our local history book, Vol. I, page 183-184: Building and Working Together, a study of the Thorhild area, 1985. The Thorhild history book, Vol. I & II has family stories of many of the pioneer's and residents. The Thorhild history book can be found online at ourroots.ca.
The Abee cemetery now has 230 graves and was canvassed (recorded & photographed) 16 Apr 2008 by Dianne Smith & June Kubica on behalf of the Thorhild Historical Society & Museum.
