One of the first cemeteries established in Berlin after World War II. It's located in the Mariendorf part of the Tempelhof district in Berlin.
After the war the city was devastated, old cemeteries unusable and a location needed to be found quickly to prevent the spread of diseases. During those times even on hospital grounds small cemeteries were established just in order to bury the dead quickly before diseases were spreading. That was the case at the St. Josef-Hospital (about 250 dead) and the Wenckebach-Hospital (about 330 dead). Those were relocated to this new Heidefriedhof, which opened in 1951. One mass grave was created (for unknown persons) and 624 single grave sites, and many for of soldiers. The entire cemetery was renovated in 2002 and crosses and stone grave markers were placed on all known grave sites.
It is non-denominational and managed by the city of Berlin.
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (20-30 years) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse have decomposed naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period the duration can be extended by another 30 years.
War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever.
