Oxmoor Cemetery contains the earthly remains of those people who lived and worked in the Oxmoor community when the Oxmoor Iron Furnace was in operation from the 1880s until the 1920s. Oxmoor is one of Birmingham's oldest industrial complexes and played a key role in the development of the Birmingham district. This cemetery serves as an important reminder of the industrial history of this area and is a testament to those many workers and their families who called this area of Jefferson County home. -borrowed the inscription from a newsletter from the Alabama Historical Commission. This cemetery is located in Jefferson County on the NE corner enclosed by West Oxmoor-Shannon road and the Oxmoor-Wenonah Road. There is no identifying marker of any kind to identify that there is a cemetery there. If you are sitting at the red light and look to your right, up the slight hill and into the woods, you will a couple of what are only a few markers that are left.
Most of the graves–and there are very many graves there–have no markers left, and are noticeable only because of the neat rows of sunken places. A few others have only sandstone rocks marking them.
The graves that still have markers are on the highest point, and used to be surrounded by brick wall enclosures or wrought-iron fences. Most stones are gone or buried now, the brick walls broken in places, and some of the fences are broken.
