McConnell Geddes Cemetery
Fountain Green, Hancock County, Illinois, USA
The Geddes-McConnell Cemetery is within sight of the original Geddes Farm. Except for Alexander Walker Geddes, who served under Col. Fonda and is buried where he died on Champion Hill during the siege of Vicksburg, they all lie side by side in the black soil of that prairie place. The home was built in 1866 by Col. John Giles Fonda on land belonging to his father-in-law, James McConnell. The dirt road was called Fonda Lane and it lead to the little village of Fountain Green about a mile away. In 2001 Alan Montague Geddes, with the help of Kay McConnell and other interested persons, completed a restoration and recording project on the McConnell Geddes Cemetery. Here lie many of those who immigrated from Pennsylvania (primarily Franklin County) in the early 1800s, as well as their descendants. Mr. Geddes recorded all grave locations, descriptions and inscriptions. It should be noted that some of this data differs from what is to be found in resources such as THE ALEXANDER WALKER STORY and Gregg's HISTORY OF HANCOCK COUNTY, 1880.
