The Confederate Rest cemetery is a section of the Point Clear Cemetery which is owned and maintained by the Point Clear Cemetery Association. Prior to 2007, the American Legion Post #199 of Fairhope, Alabama was the owner. It is located at the end of Confederate Rest Road off scenic highway 98, south of Point Clear, Alabama. The date of origin of the Point Clear cemetery is unknown, but the Confederate Road section began during the Civil War in 1861. The north side of the Point Clear Cemetery is bordered by the Lakewood Golf Course, owned by the Grand Hotel Marriott.
During the Civil War, the Grand Hotel was used as a Confederate hospital and at that time was briefly known as the ‘Quarles Hospital,' named for Brigadier General William Andrew Quarles. The hospital received many wounded and sick from the siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1863. Many of those who died there are buried at Confederate Rest. The hospital was damaged following the battle of Mobile Bay in August 1864. Although patient records were kept, a fire in 1869 destroyed most of the hotel including the hospital's records.
With many of the graves unmarked, American Legion post members made arrangements in 1999 for a ground scan radar survey of the cemetery. During the search, three previously unknown parallel grave trenches were discovered. These trenches are believed to hold between 138 and 263 Confederate soldiers. Forty-six soldiers have been identified through research, and markers have been placed for them. A cannon from 1864, statues, and perimeter chain were placed around the grounds.
