To walk the grounds of Salem Baptist Church is to step back in time. A time where one feels the peaceful yet joyful time of youth. This lovely old church has seen the families of the area worship here, and lay to rest many loved ones. Well kept grounds sheltered by majestic oaks add to the serenity of this place. A short walk across lovely grounds leads to the entrance of the cemetery. And the huge oak trees whose base has grown through the very old wrought iron fence leaves on in awe. Cypert Cemetery adjoins Salem Baptist Church on the north side. Follow Highway 1 southwest from Marvell, Arkansas. Highway 318 runs south off Highway 1 about 2 miles southwest of Marvell. The church and cemetery are located in Section 25, Range 1 East, Township 2 South. Row numbers are 1 throgh 19, west to east. My grandfather, Henry Andrew Bailes, was a active member of this church along with his family, including my mother, Edna Bailes King Fitzgerald. Henry Andrew Bailes, John Henry Bailes,(my uncle) Fred Archie King Sr. (my father)Margaret Wade King ( my sister-in-law), Octa Manning Bailes, my grandmother, Katie Jones, my great, great, aunt, William and Ella Carter,(who helped my grandfather with his family when my grandmother died) my aunt and uncle John and Lena King Scaife, and my dear friend Rose White are just a few of the dear family and friends buried at Cypert Cemetery.
In May, 2008, a tormado came through the cemetery and destroyed the beautiful oak trees. Over 90 volunteers aong with Bartlett Equipment company completed removed all the debris from this beautiful cemetery.

This is what the tornado did to the beautiful oak trees. With the help of all the volunteers, the cemetery is now clean and beautiful, but missing the large oak trees.
