Work is under way to preserve a piece of Texas A&M history, tucked away in a spot unaware to most of us in the Brazos Valley.

Texas A&M University officials say it's an idea that's been in the works since the 1950's.

The Texas A&M College Cemetery is the final resting place for at least 10 people including a former University President.

Now a plan is in the works to move those graves to a more noticeable resting place at the Aggie Field of Honor.

The College Cemetery is at the intersection of Marion Pugh Drive and Luther Street in College Station.

However, you might be surprised to know that seven of those buried in the Texas A&M College Cemetery have already been moved once.

It's an old and mostly forgotten cemetery off Marion Pugh Drive and Luther Street in College Station, nestled under a few clusters of trees and at the edge of A&M property where horses currently roam.

Texas A&M College Cemetery opened in 1939 with the last burial happening in 1942.

Now the University is considering moving the 10 or so people buried here to a more visible resting place.

"We see this as an opportunity to give a proper resting place in the Aggie Field of Honor right in the middle of the new cemetery and we think that it's a deserving place for these individuals in the university's and the community's existence," said Jason Cook, Texas A&M Vice President for Marketing and Communications.

Cook tells us the school is in the process of notifying next of kin for those buried at the cemetery. So far they've tracked down one.

"Our next step is going through a public notice where we'll actually engage media outlets from across the State of Texas to find if there are any ties to the individuals in the cemetery and then we're looking at going to the Brazos County Court to get a permit," Cook said.

The most notable person buried here is former Texas A&M University President Lafayette Lumpkin Foster who served from 1898 until his death in 1901.

Foster helped pioneer the idea of a campus cemetery and was one of the first to be buried at it.

It turns out Foster and 6 other people were disinterred in 1939 to make way for the Duncan Dining Hall on campus and were moved to the present location.

"We want to move quickly given the opening of the Aggie Field of Honor, we think that it's a right time to do that but at the same token we want to follow the right process and ultimately be respectful for the individuals and maybe even the family who have relatives that are buried at the cemetery," Cook added.

Cook tells us it's about giving those that have gone the respect and recognition they deserve front and center at the recently opened Aggie Field of Honor.

"It's more about the University giving these individuals a proper burial place. There's no plans in existence for the land at this time, so we're looking for more or less to including these individuals in the Aggie Field of Honor," he said.

At this time it's still unclear how long it would be before the University would re-inter the bodies or how much the process would cost.

President of Texas A&M from July 1, 1898 - December 2, 1901

Joseph A. Riggs and wife Sarah Riggs
Mr. Riggs was a janitor for the Agriculture Experiment Station Building

Infant child of Charles and Lottie Alvord (died 1908)
Mr. Alvord was a Professor of Agriculture from 1899-1911

Allison Smoot (died 1909)
Mr. Smoot was the head milkman at the college dairy barn during the time Henry Harrington was President of Texas A&M.

Rainey E. Benson (died 1909)
Mr. Benson was an employee of the A&M College of Texas

David Benson
Mr. Benson was an employee of the A&M College of Texas

Captain C.O. Watkins and daughter Ruth (both died in 1940)
Captain Watkins headed the college's janitorial staff for over 30 years.
Ruth passed 24 hours before her dad.

This cemetery is .39 miles south of the Texas A & M university campus. The Cemetery is located at the corner of Marion Pugh Dr and Luther Street.
