1903 War Memorial at Riverside. The plaque reads:"On this Memorial Site / Forever SET APART and Maintained by / Riverside Cemetery Association / There has been ERECTED this St. Joseph County / Native Boulder / By Ed. M. Prutzman Post, G.A.R. and Women's Relief Corps / Citizens GENEROUSLY ASSISTING,/ And on Memorial Day, May 30, 1903, / Dedicated / To the Perpetual Memory of the Soldiers of / All Wars - Defenders of the Republic./ Then surrounding the plaque are four more, stanzas of a poem, four lines on each. As you walk around the boulder clockwise, the poem reads--The neighing troop, the flashing blade,/The bugle's stirring blast,/The charge, the dreadful cannonade,/The din and shout are past.//No rumor of the foe's advance/Now swells upon the wind:/No troubled thought at midnight haunts/Of loved ones left behind.//No vision of the morrows strife/The warrior's dream alarms./No braying horn nor screaming fife/At dawn shall call to arms.//On fame's eternal camping-ground/Their silent tents are spread,/And glory guards with solemn round/The bivouac of the dead./

I have now discovered that these lines are from a longer poem, Bivouac Of The Dead, by Theodore O'Hara, a journalist who served in the Mexican War (1846 - 1847) and wrote the poem about that war.
