Little remains of the Glendy Cemetery. I counted one vault and seven markers when I was there on December 23, 2012. One can see the vault of 'John Hutson 1837' in the photograph. The community building (built in 1916) is to the viewer's right.

All else is gone.

The church building (originally called the Faith Presbyterian church) was built over part of the graveyard in 1883-1884. According to an article in the Baltimore Sun, Oct. 17, 1964, p. 32:7, "stones and vaults are visible in the basement".

A wooden frame chapel was built over some of the graves in 1877-78. The chapel (aka community building) was replaced by a stone building in 1916. A photograph of the cemetery before the erection of the stone chapel was completed can be seen in the Baltimore Sun, Feb. 8, 1916, p. 14:3.

Crypts and tombstones were also removed in 1964 to make room for a playground.

Chronology

1807 About three acres of land bought by the Trustees of the Second Presbyterian Church Congregation in the City of Baltimore from auctioneer Robert Barry for $1,051.

1875 The Trustees of the Second Presbyterian Church Congregation in the City of Baltimore convey the property to the Presbyterian Association of the City of Baltimore

1877 Construction of wooden frame mission chapel 37 x 71 feet begun "the rear portion to rest on piers, so as to cover some of the graves on the grounds".

1878-01-06 The wooden frame chapel is dedicated.

1880 The part of Glendy cemetery condemned by the City of Baltimore for the widening of Broadway "is a triangular section, about one-fourth of the whole burial ground. ... The portion of the cemetery condemned contains about eighty lots in all". After expenses "that portion of the money paid by the city left over will be devoted to the erection of a stone church, the present frame building of Faith Chapel being retained as a school house." (Sun (M), 1880-11-12, p 4:3)

1883-05-12 Cornerstone of Faith Presbyterian Church is laid.

1884-11-27 Faith Presbyterian Church is formally dedicated.

1915 Old chapel of the Faith Presbyterian Church is razed.

1916-03-05 Cornerstone of Faith Chapel (aka community building) laid.

1916-09-24 Community building dedicated. It "stands on part of the old burial ground at Gay street, though not interfering with the weather-beaten vaults".

1928-06-01 The community building is rededicated as the "Campbell Community Building".

1949 "The old church edifice ... with Campbell Memorial Building adjoining, is being purchased by the Presbytery of Baltimore for the Knox Presbyterian Church, a Negro congregation".

1950 Faith Presbyterian Church of Baltimore conveys the property to The Trustees of the Presbytery of Baltimore.

1964 Portions of the cemetery were cleared for use as a playground. "[A]ll but a few crypts and all of the tombstones on the Broadway side of the cemetery have been removed, and currently work is in progress on the Gay street side of the cemetery. In both instances, the ground has been bulldozed and the stones either carried away or buried." "[N]o effort has been made to document the area that was cleared of all markers." (Sun, 1964-10-17, p. 32:7, quoting Baltimore Heritage)

1979 The Trustees of the Presbytery of Baltimore convey the property to Green's Baptist Temple of Baltimore.

1986 Green's Baptist Temple of Baltimore conveys the property to The Cathedral of the Living Word, Inc.

1996 The property is a "trash-strewn, 1.4-acre parcel" (Sun, Nov. 21, 1996).

2003-06 The Cathedral of the Living Word, Inc. conveys the property to the Sought Out Redeemed Hope Center & Christian School.

2012-12 The Church is "Sought Out Redeemed Hope Center & Christian School", 1214 N. Broadway, Baltimore, MD 21213-3017. The Campbell Community Building is now "Home of Kingdom Light Ministries", 1214 N. Broadway, Baltimore, MD 21213.

The vault of 'John Hutson 1837' is to the left.

The white stone by the metal umbrella on the left bears the names William Hays and Catherine Hays. The stone behind the tree to the right of center is dedicated to the Roney family: William, his wife, Alice McBlair, and their daughters Alice and Margaret. On the right, the vertical monument is dedicated to Andrew H. Barnhill and his wife Elizabeth Monroe. Next to it, on the ground, are stones for Amelia Ardin and Mary J. Stuart.
