William Henry Anway operated a hardware store and blacksmith shop in Hansell. The front and the wooden sidewalk leading to it were about four feet off street level. Henry was born with legs about a foot long with no feet. He got around on a wheelchair with steel wheels that ran on a steel track behind the counters in the store. On the track was a ladder he could go up and down with just his hands to fetch something up on the shelves as quick as if he had legs. He owned and operated the first automobile that was seen around the Hansell area. It had a bowed bar to steer it rather than a steering wheel. Even with his handicap he shoed horses. Before he had his car, when he wanted to go somwhere of any distance, he would hook on to a vehicle with a rope he always carried and they would pull him to wherever he wanted to go.

Married Virginia Wyatt March 02, 1876 Ames, Story, Iowa. Children: Mary, Lillie, George.
