Halifax W1155

Halifax W1155 was being flight tested on 25th June 1942 after repair. At 14.45hrs on approach to RAF Leeming, North Yorkshire it stalled and crashed near to a searchlight battery. The tail gunner was injured but survived. All others on board and two soldiers on the ground were killed. The tail gunner who survived (P/O J/9585 Douglas Alfred Street RCAF of Welland, Ontario, Canada), was himself killed a month later on an operation to Hamburg. On the night of 26th/27th July 1942 he was the wireless operator - air gunner in Halifax W1186 when it exploded in the air and crashed near the Elbe. He is buried in Hamburg cemetery.
