Manchester Ship Canal accident victims

The mass grave of those killed in an accident on 18th July 1891 during the construction of the Manchester Ship Canal. The grave and monument are in the church yard of St James the Great church, Ince, Cheshire, not far from where the accident happened. The full names of the victims are not given on the memorial. It is probable that some of them were from Ireland as the Belfast News Letter newspaper reported the accident in some detail. The names in the newspaper report differ slightly from those on the monument so it is those on the monument that have been assumed to be correct
