TWA Flight 514 - In Memory of Those We Lost

This Virtual Cemetery memorializes the 92 victims of Trans World Airlines Flight 514, a Boeing 727-231 jetliner that crashed on the western slope of Mount Weather, a foothill of the Blue Ridge Mountains, near Berryville, Virginia, on the morning of December 1, 1974.

TWA Flight 514 originated at Indianapolis, Indiana, and was bound for Washington, D.C., with an intermediate stop at Columbus, Ohio. Upon departing Columbus, the three-engine jetliner carried 85 passengers and a crew of seven. The flight had been scheduled to land at 10:23 a.m. at Washington National Airport, directly across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., when air-traffic controllers diverted it to Dulles International Airport in Chantilly, Virginia, about 45 miles northwest of Washington National. The diversion was due to weather that included driving rain, fog, and winds gusting up to 40-50 miles an hour in the region.

While flying through the cloud layer in this turbulent weather, the jetliner failed to clear the fog-shrouded, 1,754-foot-high Mt. Weather. The plane sheared off tree tops, crossed a roadway at fifteen feet, and slammed into a 10-foot-high rocky outcropping at 11:09 a.m. The aircraft disintegrated on impact, killing all 92 persons on board instantly. The main wreckage cut a swath 60 to 70 yards wide for about a quarter of a mile. The remains of its occupants and burning wreckage were strewn over a wooded area about the size of two football fields.

“Today I looked into the sky and it was beautiful. I then realized it’s because you are there. You fly with the angels now, but part of you will always be with us.” -- Anonymous
