John More Association

The deceased descendants of John and Betty (Taylor) More who immigrated to America in 1772. John, Betty, and their eight children were the first European settlers of Delaware County, New York. The John More Association was founded in 1890 by the descendants of John More and Betty (Taylor) More to maintain the genealogical record of the family, promote communications between family members, further the interest of members of the family, and to maintain the John More Monument and burial places. John and Betty came to the United States from Rothiemurchus, Scotland (in the Highlands) in 1772 and, in 1786, settled near Roxbury, New York. John More fought in the War of Independence and was friends with a local Mohawk Indian named Joseph Brant, who actually saved the lives of John and Betty More and their children. John and Betty had eight children – John, Robert, Alexander, Jonas, Jean, James, David and Edward – and the John More Association represents the descendants of that family. The family record in 2010 contained almost 14,000 cousins, nearly 9,000 of whom were living. Notable More family cousins include Jay Gould, wealthy owner of the Pacific Union Railroad and the Western Union Telegraph Company, and James Hadley Billington, currently serving as the 13th United States Librarian of Congress.
