Memorial Grounds

Park is located at 201 North Bentz Street, Frederick, Md. 21701; phone: 301-694-1493. Memorial Park has primarily military memorials. There is one for several wars, including WWI, WWII, the Korean War (2), Vietnam War (2), D-Day Invasion, and one to George Washington. There is, however, a memorial to civilians located there also. The following is a description from a Frederick newspaper, dated April 21, 1926: "A list of 303 names has been compiled of persons who were buried in the old Reformed graveyard on Bentz street and will be placed on markers that will have a prominent place in the new Memorial ground now in the process of development. The list was prepared by City Engineer Emory c. Crum. The markers are to be of bronze, and are to be 35 inches wide by 55 inches long. Five plates will be required to take care of the list. These plates will be mounted on a granite monument and all five plates will face east. The monument is to be placed at the west end of the court that is to form the center of the new park. The Soldiers memorial occupies the east end of the court. The two monuments will be approximately 75 feet apart. The names that will appear on the markers, the dates of death, and ages of persons at time of death are as follows:" etc. I am not certain exactly where in Memorial Grounds the civilians are actually buried, as I have noticed the marker has been moved at least once to a different location in the park.

Jeannine Sickel Kleinschmidt has not added any memorials to this virtual cemetery.
