Marion Cemetery

David Easter, Sr. son of Michael,II and Barbara Essigs/Easter, was born about 1798 in Rowan / Davidson County, North Carolina. He died About 1869 in the Flower Gap community and buried at the Marion Cemetery, located on Route 854, .5 miles west of Route 816 intersection, Cana, Virginia a list of persons buried in this cemetery can be found in the book of 1990 "Cemetery Records of Carroll Co., VA", complied by The Carroll County Historical Society, Edited by Susanne Burow. According to descendants of David, Sr. after he was buried in this cemetery a small tree was planted at the head of his grave as a marker, today this is a huge size tree and grave sites are marked with field stone beneath the tree location. Identification of family members by the field stone is unknown to the generations of today. For information of this family, read beginning with Page 35, 3-A3 of book, "Descendants of Michael Easter of North Carolina" by Louise E. Easter, published in 1961. A note of interest for the record..............David Easter, Sr. married circa 1822, Susannah "Susie" Stockinger/Stockner, daughter of Christian Stockinger and Catherine Kratz / Crotts in Rowan / Davidson County, NC. She lived to see her fourth generation; she had twelve children, 97 grand children, 86 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, or a total of 197 offspring when she died, December 23, 1890. Of the twelve children born to David and Susan, ten survived. All eight of their sons were in the Confederate War of 1861-1865, only one was ever wounded in battle. Daniel, the eldest, died of pneumonia in the Confederate Prison of Point Lookout, Maryland and buried in the Confederate Prison Cemetery. My first cousin and I have placed a Confederate Grave Marker at the eight Easter brothers graves that were not marked previously in their honor of serving in the Civil War. The original spelling of Easter in Germany was "Ost/Oster", in Dutch, it was "Oost", and in the Romance or Lantin languages, the word is "Est" or "Este". In the northern states of Ohio and Pennsylvania, there is a annual reunion held by the family name of "Osterday/Easterday". The names of their first ancestors are the same as our "Michael Easter descendants". Lula Augusta Easter / Smith, daughter of Peter David Easter, and her husband, James Richard Smith have attended this Easterday reunion. A "Osterday/Easterday" coat-of arms was given to me by them in 1998. C. Ronald lEONARD P. O. B514 Hillsville, VA 24343
