A collection of the Bear/Baer/Bair/Bare/Bahr/Bar family in the United States. The family, surname of Bar, originated in the Canton of Zurich Switzerland with notes dating back to the early 1500s. Migrating to the colonies in the early 1700s to escape religious persecution and find freedom, they became one of the founding families of Lehigh County, Pennsylvania and eventually, one of the largest families in America. The surname of Bar was recorded as Baer or Bahr in the immigration documents and Baer became the standard name used in Lehigh County, Pa. The spelling of Bear, Bare and Bair became more common during the 1800s as the family spread into Ohio and western Pennsylvania. The family now numbers into the thousands across the U.S. and members most commonly spell their names using Bear, Baer, Bare or Bair.
