Leander C Burkhart, his wife and children, the new Oregonians.

Leander Columbus Burkhart and Melissa Ann Davidson arrived in the little town of Albany, Oregon Territory in October, 1847. Their parents were good friends and had traveled the Oregon Trail together. Leander fell in love with Melissa who was 12 years his junior, although I do not know when the spark was ignited. They would have met when she was just 12 years of age and he was already a young man of 24. He waited for her for 4 years, though, and on May 31st, 1851, they were married in Albany, Linn County, Oregon. They were blessed with six children: 3 sons and 3 daughters, but Leander's life was to be a short one. He only lived to the age of 52, passing on in 1875. His wife lived a longer life, passing away in 1898 at the age of 63 while visiting family in Josephine County, Oregon.
