487th Bomb Group KIA/MIA

233 veterans of the 487th Bomb Group were killed or went missing in action during World War II. Brigadier General Frederick Walker Castle, the 4th Bomb Wing Commander, flew with the crew of Lt Robert W. Harriman and led the 487th Bomb Group and the entire 8th U.S. Army Air Force on the mission of December 24, 1944. He is included here because he was killed in action on that mission. These men are also listed on the KIA/MIA page of the 487th Bomb Group website.
The 487th Bomb Group consisted of the 836th, 837th, 838th, and 839th Bomb Squadrons, and was based at Army Air Forces Station 137 near Lavenham, Suffolk, England. It was part of the 3rd Bombardment Division of the 8th U.S. Army Air Force in Europe. The Group flew 185 combat missions between May 7, 1944 and April 21, 1945. It flew the B-24 'Liberator' through July 1944, and flew the B-17 'Flying Fortress' from August 1944 through the end of the war.
The 487th Bomb Group did not have an official wartime motto or insignia. The motto 'Gentlemen From Hell' became associated with the Group after the war. This was not an official wartime motto. For more information, see Memorandum about 487th Bomb Group Insignia on the 487th Bomb Group website.
