The Donald Henry and Linda Ann (Rahdert) Knopf Family

Donald was born October 20, 1936 in Belknap Township, Presque Isle County, Michigan on the Knopf Homestead that was established 1873 by his great-grandparents, Charles and Pauline (Goltz) Knopf who originally lived in Detroit, Michigan after arriving in America in 1869. Charles and Pauline had seven children who included Don's grandfather, Hermann and his wife Wilhelmine Algenstedt Knopf. Wilhelmine's parents were Henry and Bertha (Horn) Armstadt who homesteaded land in neighboring Moltke Township, Presque Isle County, Michigan. Their children (all deceased) were Fredrick, Adeline Rosteck Grebe, Augusta Sommer, Arthur and Don's father Henry Emil Knopf. Donald's mother was Helma Margaret Legner and her parents were Albert and Johanna Wetzel Legner. Besides Donald, they had the following children: Eldon, the present owner of the Knopf Homestead; Elwood; and Karen Liedtke. Donald's first introduction to Allen County was in 1951 when he enrolled in the Concordia Prep School on Maumee Avenue that became Concordia Senior College in 1957 on Leo Road majoring in Classical Languages and Theology. While attending Concordia Prep School he met his wife, Linda Ann Rahdert, who later enrolled at Concordia University in River Forest, Illinois majoring in Elementary Education. They were married following their June graduation July 25, 1959 in Linda's home Church, St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church on Barr Street. They earned their Master of Education degrees from St. Francis University. His wife, Linda Ann Rahdert Knopf, was born in Fort Wayne on July 25, 1937, the daughter of Wilmer and Rosalind Rust Rahdert. Linda's brother, Dr Richard Rahdert was the Medical Director of the Wabash Valley Mental Health Hospital in West Lafayette, Indiana. Wilmer was born February 20, 1905 in Washington Township. Wilmer was a farmer in Perry Township on the Lima Road. Rosalind was born October 3, 1913 in Buckley (Iroquois County), Illinois, daughter of Fredrick and Martha Luhrsen Rust. She worked at Pollack Bros. and Lincoln Life Insurance Co. Wilmer's parents were Christian Rahdert and Elise Kramer whose farm was on the southwest corner of Coldwater Road and Coliseum Boulevard. Elise's parents were Charles and Sophie Rose Kramer whose farm was on the Leo Road.
Donald and Linda began their professional life as Lutheran elementary teachers in Evergreen Lutheran School in Detroit, MI from 1959-1960. In 1960 they returned permanently to Allen County when Donald became the principal/teacher at the Emmanuel Lutheran School (Soest) from 1960 - 1969, and from 1969 - 1998 as elementary teacher at Hoagland and Harlan; while Linda taught twenty-eight years at her home church school, St. Paul Lutheran on Barr Street and four years at Central Lutheran School in New Haven.
Their family includes son, Timothy Tadd Knopf and daughter Alison Anne Knopf.
