Welcome to the Site of the Friends of Oak Hill Cemetery of Minneapolis /Richfield.

We are a research and support group for a historic cemetery-- Oak Hill Cemetery of Minneapolis/Richfield.

This cemetery was originally founded during Minnesota's territorial settlement era. Richfield was founder settlement of Hennepin County. Its location was just outside the protective boundary Fort Snelling. Many of its early land claim holders were former residents of Fort Snelling or its nearby trading posts. This settlement was located on one of Minnesota Territory's first roads- the Indian trail ( later Lyndale Avenue ) that connected the Fort with Mississippi River settlements and chain of local lakes --Harriet, Calhoun, Cedar, and Lake of the Isles . Area settlements increased dramatically after statehood and the Civil War. By the early 20th century settled farms and homesteads filled Hennepin County. St Anthony ( later Minneapolis) became county seat and its municipal boundaries repeatedly expanded into adjacent Richfield. Today Richfield land area is a fraction of it's original boundaries.
This cemetery is now within boundaries of the city of Minneapolis. The cemetery therefore is both Oak Hill Cemetery of Minneapolis and Richfield.

The cemetery is located adjacent to a Methodist church which was named the Richfield Methodist Episcopal Church. Today the cemetery is not affiliated with the church nor is it a municipal cemetery; but a private cemetery. Its managed by a private cemetery board organization .
Many of the cemetery's original organizers are buried here, as are many generations of their descendants.
