Hi, I am Jolanda,

Years ago I started with my familytree.

I am very gratefull for all the people who photographed all the headstones. This way I found a lot of familyhistory and even family in America.

So now I am trying to do something to help others. I started transcribing and taking photo's march 2021. First I will be documenting the general cemetery of Almelo.

In the Netherland you rent a grave. It can be for 5,10,30 or 50 years. (I guess it can be different at different cemetries). By law a deseased person will have a minimum grave rest of 10 years.
Someone is responsible for your grave. They need to pay for it and do some maintenance. If the period of rent is over the owner of the graveyard will contact the person that is responsible. Sometimes this person is already passed away or doesn't want to pay anymore. The grave will be cleared then and the headstone will be demolished. A lot of headstones are dissapearead this way.

On the headstones is mostly stated the name and date of birth and passing. A lot of times it is mentioned that he/she is the husband/wife of or the widower/widow of.
In the Netherlands women are often have there maiden name on the stone. It is very normal in the Netherland that you take on your husbands name but keep your maiden name also.
For example: miss x Jansen is marrying mister x de Vries her name will be miss x de Vries-Jansen. On the gravestone (especially the old ones) the maiden name is used a lot

If you have any question please do not hesitate and ask me.
I understand Englisch, German and Dutch.
