Hello to all family history buffs!

Having researched my own family tree we came across a Cemetery in Manchester UK that was in a very poor condition, after contacting Manchester City Council we were given permission to uncover, map and record all the gravestones in the Cemetery, hence - I am part of the Manchester General Cemetery Transcription Project based in Manchester UK. You can contact us via our project website - please take a look!! We hope there maybe something of interest for you to read! For us it's a labour of love! We have helped many, many people with their search for buried loved ones and ancestors!

We have had many contact us who have been told there is no stone or given the wrong information on the cemetery and we have been able to provide a photo, map and other additional information! Checking with us is free!

We have recorded over 106,000 persons buried in the cemetery which opened in 1837. We offer a FREE LOOKUP SERVICE for those searching for graves in the Cemetery. We can provide you with a photograph (if available) and a map where the gravestone is situated in the Cemetery and sometimes other information too. (ALL FREE) We provide a photo where the inscription is clearly visible. The Cemetery has abt 50% of Flat gravestones buried below soil - the project has uncovered 90% of these and recorded and photographed before recovering them to protect them. We believe we are the only ones to do this and are the best people to contact!

We do have copyright on our photos etc., this is because we are a non funded voluntary project and have worked excessively hard in all weathers at all times of the year to uncover these gravestones. We do allow them to be published as long as a common courtesy the project is credited. As the Council has regulations in regards to photo's being taken in their cemeteries we have been given permission by them for the project. Whilst there is many an argument about photo's being taken in the Cemeteries we suggest you take it up with the Council. No offence to anyone but it gets tiring being told by those who think they know about copyright when we have a project to finish and have agreed to conditions with the Council to get permission to do the project and that is all we are interested in. The Council have let the project have access to records that are not available to the public to enable us to do so well with the project.

I check regular Find A Grave to see if there is anyone we can help (this doesn't mean there is a gravestone) and point you in the direction of our Project Website. If there is no stone we let you know though we could have other information that maybe of help to you Our lookup service is via our project website ONLY and not F.A.G.. Many are being given information on F.A.G. and given photo's of grass patches and a gate & bushes and told wrong information so it is worth just contacting the Project.
Others were told that if their ancestor died in the workhouse or the grave number was a longer number they were at the back of the cemetery and provided with a photo or a gate or bushes this was TOTALLY WRONG INFORMATION! or a grave number with the wrong photo. Or just generally poor photo's uploaded to F.A.G. that are not readable. The Project were able to help them out with the correct information.

So, please contact us! at: mgctp.co.uk
