Preserving the past for the future!!
Right now, this isn't a "big deal" to my kids-- but I hope someday they will have the same passion I do to "hold on" and preserve the history of our family.
I started searching my family's history aggressively in 1996. My parents and I would always visit the old Wilson Cemetery in Coal County, OK every time my cousins came to visit from California. My earliest memory of the cemetery was 1974 at my great-grandfather's grave (John R Gray). We travelled all over Lehigh, Clarita and Coalgate with the cousins and my dad's brothers/sister to visit the places they were born and grew up. We would stay with Lillie & Ralph Stubblefield who was my grandmother Lena's niece - they were always our tour guides. They loved to tell the old stories and memories. I will never forget being at their house the day Elvis died. We would also visit with the Lampkins and Horns because my father (Joseph Seargent) had many fond memories with those cousins growing up.
My father died in 2008 and since that time I've become more determined to preserve and hold on to the past of my ancestors.
