Bio

Colonel Mickey S. Evans (US Army, Retired) is a native Texan, born in Denton, Texas on June 4, 1944. He is the son of Earl and Eunice Evans (both deceased), who relocated to Huntsville, Walker County, Texas in April 1950.

Mickey attended Huntsville public schools and graduated from Huntsville High School (HHS) in May 1962. He entered Sam Houston State University (SHSU) and graduated in May 1966 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Army through the university’s Reserve Officers Training Corps program. He earned a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering from Kansas State University in 1977 and a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the United States Naval War College in 1987.

His military career as a field artilleryman, Army aviator, human resource manager, and inspector general covered 26 years of continuous, active federal service. His overseas assignments included two tours of duty in the Republic of Vietnam as an Army aviator and 42 months in the Federal Republic of Germany as a field artilleryman and Army aviator.

His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (with one oak leaf cluster), the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (with 3 oak leaf clusters) the Air Medal (with numeral 19), the Army Commendation Medal, the Senior Army Aviator Badge, Parachutist Badge, and the Air Assault Badge.

Upon his retirement from active duty in August 1992, Mickey served four years as the Special Assistant to the Louisiana Adjutant General and performed duties as the staff leadership and management consultant, professional development trainer, and subject matter expert on total quality management and organizational performance assessment activities using the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Criteria for Performance Excellence.

Returning to Huntsville in July 1996, he volunteered with the Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce and its Huntsville Leadership Institute (HLI) where he served four years on its board of directors and two consecutive terms as the HLI board chairman. He has also served as a member of the Chamber board of directors. As a HEARTS Veterans Museum of Texas volunteer, he taught “Lessons in Liberty” to school children and adults. He sings with the Huntsville Men’s Choir and he is the president of the HHS Ex-Students Association, and the reunion coordinator for HHS Class of 1962. He has served as an examiner for both the Louisiana and Texas Quality Awards. He is a member of the Military Officers Association of America and its East Texas Chapter. He served for four years on the Huntsville City Council as Councilmember At-large, Position 3 where he was the Chairman of the Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee, the Chairman of the Information Technology Committee and a member of the Finance Committee.

His hobbies include playing the piano, choral singing, reading, writing, personal computing, cooking and communicating with Hornet classmates on a regular basis.

Mickey is married to Linda (Ryan) for over 50 years and both have Huntsville roots back to 1950. Linda is a retired elementary school teacher and also a graduate of HHS (1964) and SHSU (1967). They have two married daughters and three grandchildren. Mickey and Linda reside at Spring Lake Estates in Huntsville, Walker County, Texas.
