As a child I played with the personal belongings of Sarah Decker Boggs. Her silver hairbrush and comb, her button hooks, the locket with her portrait containing a piece of her lovely hair in a braid, in the back.

Once in a while my dad would take out Captain Boggs swords, his dress sword and his everyday sword and the photos of his regiment. We gasped at the letters he wrote his wife as he slowly lay dying from lead poisoning from the bullet lodged in his body. His handwriting gradually became illegible, sadly heading down the hill of the pages.

We were so proud of the words that his superior officer wrote to his wife explaining his bravery. And we felt the pain that the telegram regretfully notifying her of his death caused her.

We know how much his family loved him and missed him.
