We see ourselves as more than the sum of our years. If we look forward through the windshield, and have children or grandchildren, we gain a measure of reassurance in the knowledge that we will live on, in some way, through our children and their progeny. And if we look back, at our parents, grandparents, their other ancestors, we see the road in the rear view mirror, too. Through family history we seek our connection to the past and the future and an appreciation of our place in the long human chain.
