The picture is my family in 1960. I am the little fellow in front with the binoculars. Unfortunately, all are gone now except the little fellow standing beside me, who is my brother.

The patriarch of the family, Robert Lawson Penland (1892-1979) (Center-back), a carpenter originally from Macon County, NC, moved from Rabun County, Ga to this location in Douglas County, Ga and Literally, by hand, built his and Paralee's home on this spot in the 50s. The land has since been sold, his home torn down and a church now stands on the property at the corner of U.S. Hwy 78 (Bankhead Hwy) and County Line Rd. in Lithia Springs, Ga.

When he originally built the house there were no water lines in that part of the county-only well water, so the house had no bathroom. He, my dad and I later added a bathroom when pipes were finally run to the area. County Line Rd. (both at the time he built his house and at the time this picture was taken) was a dirt road.

When I got my driver's license, I "Officially" became his chauffer driving him where he needed or wanted to go until such time as I joined the Military. Those were great times in my life and it was fun being a kid.

Grandpa and I later added a couple of rooms to the house and a full basement. He used to grow and raise his own food, including the meat they ate and vegetables from his garden, and I spent many days with him working his gardens and helping him cut the grass at Mozley Memorial Gardens. He now Rests there, along with most of the family in the picture.

Grandpa Robert died a few days before my first son was born.

If you would like information on the Penland family, I have over 1000 names in my family tree dating back to the 1500's. Just shoot me a message or reply to my email address. Being a Penland myself, I started out many years ago researching my family history and have done Extensive Research on the Penland Name.

I have found Penlands in the tree from all walks of life and still searching. I have traced the first Pentland to come to America from Scotland. Once arriving here the "T" was dropped from the name by an ancestor of that first Pentland, whose father was Sheriff of Midlothian, Scotland. I have also discovered the family tree of our Scottish ancestors who stayed in Scotland.
