NOTE TO THE PHILPOTT GRANDCHILDREN of Nellie Jewell Hare/Haire and James Corbett Philpott.

Nellie's mother, Ellen died after the birth of she and my grandfather, John Wesley Hare's 5th child, Charles Laurence...When I first connected up with several of my Aunt Nellie's grandchildren they told me Nellie's mother Ellen was a Slinker. I had been told for years she was a Purcell. I insisted my listing of Ellen on OUR family tree she was a Purcell. With a lot of research and talking with my cousin, Linda (Hare) Ford who still lives in the area where the family lived back then, I continued with Ellen as a Purcell. My search lead me first on a site that shows headstones. I have seen many, many thousands of headstones on line. When I clicked on Alexander Dote Cemetery in Barren County, there was only one headstone remaining in a field along a barb wired fence. At first I was a little set back at what I was seeing , I see, "Ellen, wife of J. W. Haire, for a second or two it didn't register, but when it did I started crying. I had found my grandfather's first wife's headstone. I knew the story of her dying after Laurence death and some of what had became of Laurence...Ellen was so young. She isn't my grandmother but mother of my father's half siblings. I had to call Linda, she told me when she was young they used to decorate Ellen's grave. Also, Linda's father, Uncle Horace was not Ellen's child. He, my father and Uncle Ed were children from John Wesley's 2nd wife, my grandmother. I continued my search. I thought I would add to OUR family tree your grandfather, James Corbett Philpott's family for the Philpott clan. When I added his mother, she is the Slinker. The Slinker name came from your grandfather's side, not your grandmother's side. I also continued with determination to find Ellen's parents. Ellen was only on one census, the 1900 census with John Wesley and your grandmother, Nellie, 1 year old. Ellen died Feb 2, 1908. The only other census she could be on would have been the 1890. Unfortunately, the 1890 census records burned in a fire. She didn't live long enough to find her on another census. I did find both of John Wesley's marriage bonds to both of his brides. The site that had Ellen's headstone had this information, "Earlier transcription has 6 graves, only one stone remains.. Surnames include: Haire, Norris, Purcell, Robertson and Vaughn". It turned out the Haire was John Wesley's father, William Cooper Hare/Haire and the Purcell was Ellen's mother, Nancy E (Shaw) Purcell. I also found your great-great grandmother Nancy's obituary.

I'm thankful for so many of my Aunt Nellie's family that have responded to me and are friends with me on facebook. Many I responded to because they got in touch with me. I'm thankful for our small visits on facebook, with pictures and such. I have snatched some of those pictures and added them to your pages on the tree. I'm also thankful for the many of you, including Nellie and James' great grandchildren that have supplied me with information and photos. I've grown to love many of you people. Nellie Jewell Haire was the first child born to John Wesley Hare and Ellen Purcell Hare. The Hare name was spelled also Haire by some members of the family. Her siblings were: Nancy Agnes, William Thomas, Bessie Frances Isabell, and Charles Laurence Hare. Her mother, Ellen died six months after the birth of Laurence from complications from his birth. Her father, John Wesley could not care for Laurence and he was adopted to Stanley Russell Parrish and Eva Goodhue Parrish. Laurence and birth family stayed in contact through out his life. Laurence "Larry" is buried in Rossville Cemetery, Rossville, Illinois.

Two and 1/2 years after death of Nellie's mother Ellen, on 10 Oct 1910 her father married again to my grandmother, Maggie Lynn Roller. The children from that marriage and half siblings to Nellie: the first two children, Wesley Franklin and Russell White Hare, died as infants. The last three children: Walter Denan, Horace Edwin and John Edward Morris Hare.

Nellie married James Corbett Philpott assuming in the Barren County area of Kentucky on 5 Dec 1917. They had their first three children in the Glasgow, Barren County Kentucky area. The 1920 census list them living in Hiseville, Barren County, Ky. According to her obituary they moved to Bloomington Indiana around 1922. The remainder children were born in the Bloomington Indiana area. Their children are: Lena Mae, Johnie "John" Eugene, Leonard Lee, Sr, Otis Thomas "Bill", Melinda Frances, Veneta Mitchell "Jackie", and Henry Maxwell "Ted" Philpott. Their youngest child was the last of the children to die. Henry Maxwell Philpott died in 2009. I met Max at the Hare Family Reunion in Glasgow, Barren County, Ky, Apr 2002, we were honoring my father, Walter D Hare with his headstone and the offsprings and families from my grandfather, John Wesley Hare/Haire. Max seemed very excited to be there.

I am Nellie's niece. I was told by my cousin, Linda and another of Nellie's nieces and daughter of Nellie's brother, Horace Hare, Nellie died of breast cancer...This was confirmed when I found her death certificate.
