Husband of Julia Ann (Obear) Chickering, who he married in 1831. Soon after his marriage he moved to Pittsburg where he was a merchant, and served as deputy sheriff. His children were born there. Later he returned to New Ipswich, at first on the family farm, later in the Center Village. He was postmaster for several years. During the last few years, he kept a hotel at Groton Junction (now Ayer), Mass., where he died.
